Dr. Samuel McLaughlin, senior research scientist at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been selected as the first faculty fellow in the natural sciences at Hampden-Sydney (Va.) College.
The position of fellow was recently established by the college to honor Hampden-Sydney graduates who have had or are having distinguished careers in academic disciplines. McLaughlin is a 1965 Hampden-Sydney graduate with a B.S. degree in pre-med.
He was honored Sunday, April 9, during a dinner at the home of Hampden-Sydney President Dr. Samuel Wilson. Other fellows to be honored are Dr. Francis Nash Boney, professor of history at the University of Georgia, and Dr. William H. Trapnell, professor of history at Indiana University.
McLaughlin, an adjunct associate professor at the University of Tennessee, earned a master's degree in forest ecology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and a doctorate in forest physiology from Duke University.
He lives in Knox County with his wife, Marilyn, who is community outreach coordinator for ORNL. Their son, Matt, is a student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram research and development facilities, is managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, a Lockheed Martin company, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
