Advanced Grid Modeling

Grid Monitoring, Modeling and Analysis

The nation’s power grid is a complex, interdependent system of generation and fuels networks, transmission and distribution lines, and essential controls that keep electricity flowing for our nation’s commerce and our citizens’ daily lives.

This dynamic grid requires constant monitoring and balancing between supply and demand. The growing number of renewable power sources, intelligent devices, sensors and controls are making the task more challenging. The data generated by these devices is growing exponentially and must be captured and analyzed, often in near real-time, to ensure resilient, reliable and secure delivery.

To address these challenges, the Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity created the Advanced Grid Modeling Research Program to develop methods to expand real-time situational awareness of grid conditions and measurement-based, faster control. By using advanced computation and artificial intelligence, researchers are developing models to better simulate and predict scenarios and create predictive controls that avoid disruption as well as responding effectively when events occur.

At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, our scientists are using their expertise and capabilities in supercomputing, advanced simulations and mathematics, sensors, power electronics, and advanced hardware controls, to tackle the mission of the AGM Program.

ORNL Advanced Grid Modeling Framework

The ORNL AGM projects can be represented as integrated projects outlined in the figure below.  These projects are tied together from sensing and measurement activities that feed into planning and or operational tools.  Each project plays a key role across the various technical themes.

Sensing & Measurement: getting the right data to the right place at the right time.  Within the sensing and measurement activity includes data analytics to identify patterns in near real-time.

Planning tools: Increase model fidelity and availability

System Operations & Control: Increase simulation speed and flexibility and provide seamless control and protection across the grid.
